Houston Heights Craftsman Garage Apartment

Seeking additional space for their three kids to hang out along with an inviting retreat to host frequent out-of-town guests, our clients decided to add square footage in a unique way: by expanding the footprint of their garage and building a well-considered apartment nestled in the trees above. In collaboration with Four Square Design Studio in Houston, we worked with these long-time clients to design an airy but efficient one-bedroom apartment to meet all of their wish-list needs, including one primary goal: make it feel like a playful extension of their already sophisticated home. We leaned into a tighter, earthier palette throughout and favored texture and contrast over color to keep the space feeling fresh and modern. Cutting no corners, the clients perhaps created a new problem: who gets first dibs on the garage apartment?
