A significant leak in our clients’ kitchen prompted a renovation they had long been considering. In an effort to make lemonade out of lemons, they took the opportunity to reconsider the flow of not only the unique kitchen and home office (formerly a staff room) layout, but the remainder of the apartment. Subtle flow changes allowed them to create a comfortable true third bedroom for their youngest son. We were tasked with assisting with the renovation and a cheerful redecoration plan to create a cohesive, livable, and happy home for this young family. Fun fact: we worked in fifteen wallpaper designs in this pattern-driven space.

Several years ago, our clients had the opportunity to combine their existing apartment with a neighboring one to create a comfortable space for their growing family. When the other neighboring apartment became available (fun fact: they rented this space during their first renovation) they decided to double down and reimagine what had started as their first one-bedroom apartment together, as a four-bedroom family home. We had the joy of consulting during the renovation process and assisting the clients in interior redecoration of the spaces to form one inviting, cheerful, and delightfully livable apartment.

When our clients decided to make the move uptown to lay down roots for their growing family, they wanted to create a home that was grounded in tradition, while remaining fresh and stylish. We thoughtfully considered the renovation and decorative plan to reflect their southern roots and city sophistication by balancing a crisp and cohesive palette with antiques and modern family heirlooms that could endure with time. Not to be out-shined by a pandemic, we moved these clients in just in time to welcome their youngest daughter into their family.

When an estate condition classic six apartment came available across the street from our existing one-bedroom apartment, my husband and I jumped at the opportunity to restore one of these beautifully proportioned apartments that had luckily not been stripped of its prewar charm. Honoring the original details while updating the apartment for our modern needs, we matched mouldings, maintained the original doors and functioning transom windows, refinished the handsomely bordered parquet floors, and even kept a portion of the original kitchen cabinetry. We moved just two days prior to New York City’s shelter-in-place order and found great comfort in our cheery new home, shared garden space, and the caring community in Jackson Heights during such a frightening time.

In fortuitous twist of fate, the apartment next door became available just as our clients were considering additional space for their family. We instantly connected with these homesick Texans over our shared roots (fun side note - their chatty “Howdy” tile pattern won them a feature in the WSJ), love of good storytelling through beloved objects, and a deeply ingrained need to create a comfortable home. We assisted these clients with their full apartment redecoration plan in tandem with their renovation. It was a joy to mix old and new, traditional with contemporary, and reimagine their once cozy space as it transformed into a deeply personal family home.

We were fortunate to help our clients take on several room-by-room redecoration projects in their traditional family apartment. The success of these smaller projects lead to a much larger undertaking: the redesign of their dated kitchen and office space (formerly a staff room). We transformed the divided space into a cheery, open kitchen concept with eat-in capabilities and a workspace and reworked the small bathroom into a memorable powder bath. With an eye towards family-friendly design, this project was featured in Erin Gates’ second book: Elements of Family Style.
